Sleepy Hollow

So Halloween is just a few days away and I like to celebrate by watching one of my favorite movies Sleepy Hollow. When this movie came out almost no one liked it and I didn't understand because I loved it! How could it go wrong when it combines two of my favorite things: Johnny Depp and Tim Burton. Yes some of the parts are a bit cheesy, like how Tim takes the opportunity to spray Johnny with blood every chance he gets, and how Johnny, as Ichabod, faints something like five times throughout the movie, but that is what makes it awesome. The movie is visually beautiful to watch and funny and creepy at the same time. So if you have never seen it go rent it right now, and if you did see it and didn't really like it, give it another chance for goodness sakes! It is totally worth it, I think I will go watch it right now.

A Little Kid At Heart

Recently, when I was cleaning out my closet at my parents' house, I found this set of paper dolls which I have had since I was much younger. I had pretty much forgotten about them, but when I saw them I still loved them just as much as when I first got them. I guess I am just still a little kid at heart. I am pretty sure I got them ages ago in Port Townsend (go figure) and I definitely played with them, but I was always very careful when I did because they were so pretty and I didn't want to bend them. There are two different girls, each with her own set of outfits. All the outfits are amazing, but I when I was younger I liked the brunette's clothes better, and looking at them now, I still do! I guess I haven't changed much, I still love the old fashioned look in general.

Hey, I've Been There!

Last time I was in Bend I got this book at my favorite used book store. I love Victorian houses and so as soon as I saw this book, I knew it had to come home with me. I was especially excited because they were West Coast Victorians and that is my coast!

As I was looking through it, I was surprised to find some houses in Port Townsend that I actually recognized and had even been inside! This one I went into on the Historic Homes Tour last time I was in PT. One of my older posts has a picture of it that I took when I was there!

I have been in this one too, that top part with all those little windows actually works like a seasonal solar calendar, I am not sure exactly how it works, because I forget the story they told us when we were there, but it is really interesting so I will try and find out more about it and do a separate post later.

I have not yet looked through the whole book and read all the information about each house, but here are just a few more that caught my eye as I was flipping through.

Notice the sculptures standing on the porch.

I like this one because it is smaller and more
cottage like, but still has that Victorian feel.

Pretty in pink.

From Like A Month Ago....

Ok, so a while ago now I shared pictures of the adorable handkerchief box that I got at the Olympic Antique Shop in Port Townsend, WA, but I couldn't share the other thing I got there because my camera had run out of batteries. Well now I have finally purchased some new batteries and so here are the pictures! This is the cover of a scrap book from 1900. It doesn't have the actual scrap book attached, but I bought it because it was so pretty and old, and I thought it would look great framed and hung on the wall!

The Shop Lady and I discussed it and we
both thought the girl looks like Kate Winslet
in some old timey movie.

You can see it says "Scrap Book" in gold, so elegant!

My Tea Time

I don't do it every day, but sometimes when I have time in the late morning or early afternoon, I like to have a full out tea time. There is something so nice about using a real teapot, a pretty teacup, and all the accouterments.
This is pretty much what it looks like every time, except today I added a candle and an apple for a snack.

This is one of my favorite teacups and the one I use most frequently.

I love the garden motif!

While I am drinking my tea, I usually like to watch Martha Stewart which I record ahead of time on my DVR (yay for being able to fast forward through commercials). Because of this I am often sitting on the couch and for a while didn't have a good place to put all my tea things. I started putting them all on a pretty tray which I had, but I still didn't have anywhere convenient to rest the tray; that is until I realized it fit almost perfectly into a random, small, table frame that I just happened to have!

It is now just the right height to put in front of me for easy access when I am sitting on the couch.

Don't you just love it when your bring home an item that you have no idea how you will ever use and it turns out to be just right for something after all?

Pretty Porches

I think it is sad that porches are no longer automatically included when houses are built. They do seem to be making a comeback, but as far as I am concerned every house should have one, or possibly two! My dream house would have a huge front porch and a screened in back porch. Here are some pretty porches that I wish were mine.

Sick = Not Fun

I have been sick for the last few days, and when I have a cold nothing sounds better than a nice, cozy and peaceful bed. I love this one that I found on bedzine.com. The bed is so pretty and the room so airy, I am sure that if I could just cuddle up in there I would feel much better! (I wouldn't mind having that delightful hat either!)

Decoration And Acquisition

My apartment is not conducive to decorating. There is not enough space to really rearrange the furniture and definitely not enough space to acquire new furniture. I would like to move and rent a house soon, so there is not much point in doing too much hard core decorating anyway. Despite this I wanted to try to create one space that was comfy, somewhat put together, and representative of my taste. I settled on the guest bedroom because it has the least amount of stuff already in it, and it is the least lived in so it will stay the neatest and not be in anyone's way.
I have not gotten very far yet, but I did take the first step by bringing a canopy back with me from my trip to Bend. This canopy used to be on my bed at my parents' house, but they are trying to clean things out anyway so it worked well for me to use it in my apartment instead. I hung it over the guest bed, from hooks for easy put-up and take-down.

A good first step toward a relaxing,
feminine, space.

I added the star lamp, which doesn't exactly go
with the look I am picturing, but it is cute and
I have nowhere else to put it!

Another thing I brought back from Bend with me: these pretty needlepoints. Apparently, they were made by my Great, Great, Grandmother, which makes them even more special. I can't wait to hang them up in the guest bedroom to add to the charm!

These were the frames they came in and I am not
usually a huge fan of gold, but I like the subtle
gold rims along the inside edges.

I also wanted to share some pictures of some of the things I have recently acquired. However, I only managed to take pictures of one of the things before my stupid camera ate the batteries. I couldn't find new ones, so the other photos will have to wait until I can get to the store.

I got this amazing handkerchief box at the Olympic Antique Shop in Port Townsend, WA.

So pretty!

As you can see, I already stocked it with
my fancy handkerchiefs and gloves.

I love, love, love it! I love the colors and the delicate portraits of the ladies. The shop was small and the shop lady and I talked about several of the things she had there. I gushed over this piece quite loudly and expressed my regret that I could not afford to buy it since the price tag said seventy-some dollars. Ms. Shop Lady must have seen how much I loved it because she threw it in for free with my other purchase! A $70 box, free! And that was before she even knew it was my birthday. Thank you so, so much Shop Lady, I will definitely be returning to your shop next time I am in town. I will post pictures of thing I actually purchased as soon as I can.

If Only I Had $350

If only I had $350 I would buy this amazing pirate coat created by Damsel in this Dress.

I recently went to a renaissance faire where Damsel in this Dress had a booth. As soon as I saw the amazing pieces they had I immediately wanted one. The bodice I had my eye on was almost affordable and I was so close to buying it, but I held back. Then when I got home I went to their website and discovered this amazing pirate coat! The sleeves are even detachable for hot weather, genius!

Black Vodka!

Here is another cool Halloween thing from Martha Stewart. Drinks made using black vodka! I didn't even know there was such a thing as black vodka, but if I ever have a Halloween party, I will definitely be using it! It is so creepy and and yet classy at the same time. Awesome.

Also, as you may have noticed, I have changed my blog colors and picture to look Halloweeny, yay! They will change again once October is over.

Halloween Is Coming!

Some people may think it is a little early to be thinking about Halloween, but as far as I am concerned as soon as October starts, my favorite holiday is not far off! Here is a cute decorating idea from Martha Stewart: creepy candles.

I think these are great because they are very atmospheric, but so simple to make. All you have to do is drizzle wax from red candles onto white candles!

Glove Bunnies

I just wanted to share this picture of the Glove Bunnies I have been making. I saw the idea on Martha Stewart and it was so cute I had to experiment with it and make some Glove Bunnies of my own! Each one is unique and has its own name. This is the first batch that I made, and I am now starting on a second batch. They are adorable if I do say so myself!
